The city cricket stadium was getting a new roof, and the newspaper printed the cost on the front page: Rs 45,67,00,000.
Kabir read it out as "forty-five thousand six hundred seventy crore" and nearly fell off his chair.
Anaya read the same digits and got a number a hundred times smaller.
Only one of them could be about to tell their parents the stadium cost more than the entire city's budget.
Kabir brought the newspaper clipping to school, very pleased with himself. "Forty-five thousand six hundred seventy crore rupees," he announced. "That's more than some countries earn in a year!" Anaya took the clipping and read the same digits slowly: 45,67,00,000. She frowned. "That's forty-five crore, sixty-seven lakh. Not thousand-crore anything."
They argued about it all the way to Ms. Rao's desk. Ms. Rao did not tell either of them the answer. Instead she drew a place value chart on the board with the periods labelled: ones, thousands, lakhs, crores. She asked Kabir to place the digits of 45,67,00,000 into the chart, one box at a time, starting from the right.
Kabir placed them carefully: 0, 0 in ones; 0, 0 in thousands; 6, 7 in lakhs; 4, 5 in crores. When he finished, he read the chart period by period instead of digit by digit: forty-five (crore), sixty-seven (lakh), zero (thousand), zero (ones). "Forty-five crore sixty-seven lakh," he said, and stopped. "That's... not what I said before."
"Where did the mistake happen?" asked Ms. Rao. Kabir realised he had been reading the digits left to right like an ordinary sentence, without checking which period each group actually belonged to — he had called the lakh-period digits "thousand" out of habit.
Anaya, who had placed her digits correctly from the start, still wanted to know the actual rupee amount, so together they worked it out on the chart: 45 crore = 45,00,00,000, plus 67 lakh = 67,00,000, giving 45,67,00,000 exactly. Enormous — but not a mis-stated country's budget. Kabir admitted the chart had caught what his eyes alone had missed.
A large number is easier to read once its digits are sorted into periods: ones, thousands, lakhs, crores, working from the right. Each period holds two or three digits and has its own name, so you never read a big number as one long word — you read it period by period.
The place value chart exists because eyes are unreliable on long digit strings: without marked boxes, it is easy to miscount how many zeros separate one period from the next, exactly the slip Kabir made.
To read any number: count digits from the right in groups of 3-2-2-2 (ones, thousands, lakhs, crores), write the period name after each group, then say the groups in order from the largest period down. The digits never move — only how you group and name them does.
Write down any 8-digit number (make one up, or use a phone number without the +91). Draw eight boxes on paper, split 2-2-2-3 from the right, and write one digit per box. Read the number out loud using the period names.
Find a large number printed anywhere at home (a bank statement total, a car's odometer, a recipe scaled up) and place its digits into your own drawn chart to read it correctly.
