The school wanted a fence around the rectangular garden AND enough grass seed to cover it.
Anaya measured the outside edge. Kabir measured the inside surface.
Both were right — they were answering two completely different questions.
The principal asked the class to help plan the new garden: a rectangle 8 m long and 5 m wide. "We need to know two things," she said. "How much fencing to buy, and how much grass seed."
Anaya started walking the outside edge in her head. "The fence goes all the way around. Top, bottom, and both sides." She added: 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 metres of fencing.
"That's the perimeter," said Ms. Rao. "The total distance around the outside boundary of a shape. For a rectangle, it's twice the length plus twice the width — or add all four sides, which is the same thing."
Kabir was thinking about the grass seed instead. "The seed doesn't care about the edge. It has to cover the whole inside surface."
He pictured the garden as a grid of 1-metre squares: 8 squares across, 5 rows down. "8 times 5 is 40. Forty square metres of grass."
"That's the area," said Ms. Rao. "The amount of flat surface inside a shape, measured in square units — because you're counting how many unit squares fit inside. For a rectangle: length times width."
"So the fence needs 26 metres, but the grass needs to cover 40 square metres," said Anaya. "Those are totally different kinds of numbers."
"Exactly — and that's the trap," said Ms. Rao. "Perimeter is measured in plain units, like metres. Area is measured in SQUARE units, like square metres, because you're filling a surface, not walking a line. Never mix the two up, and never give an area answer without the word 'square' attached."
She then set them a square plot, 6 m on every side. "Since all four sides of a square are equal, the shortcuts get even simpler."
Kabir worked it out: perimeter = 4 × 6 = 24 m. Area = 6 × 6 = 36 square metres.
"A square is just a rectangle where the length and width happen to be the same number," said Ms. Rao. "Every rectangle rule still works — it just simplifies because both sides match."
Perimeter is the total distance around the outside boundary of a shape, measured in ordinary units (m, cm). For a rectangle: perimeter = 2 × (length + width). For a square: perimeter = 4 × side.
Area is the amount of flat surface inside a shape, measured in SQUARE units (sq. m, sq. cm) because it counts how many unit squares fit inside. For a rectangle: area = length × width. For a square: area = side × side.
A square is a special rectangle where length and width are equal, so its formulas simplify to just using one side length.
Perimeter and area answer different questions and can never be directly compared — one measures a boundary line, the other measures a covered surface.
Measure the length and width of a rectangular door or table and calculate both its perimeter and area.
Find a square object (a tile, a coaster) and work out its perimeter and area from just one side length.
